When my daughter got a job at 16, we did get her a basic texting phone plan (no smart phone) but I paid to have parental controls put on her phone account. Her phone service and texting turned off at 11pm and back on at 6am. She could still call and text us and her grandparents but her friends weren’t keeping her up all night texting her.

Dawn, my daughter has a smart phone but bought it and pays the bill herself. She thought that gave her “free reign”, she was wrong. 😉 I have an upcoming post about ways to limit your teens texting. I like the idea of being able to limit capability directly from the phone! Thanks for sharing!
