I love using historicla fiction, but I think it is important to emphasize what was actually happening at that time. I used to teach 8th grade and we read My Brother Sam is Dead when the Social Studies teacher was teaching about the revolution. It allowed the kids to enjoy the era from a first person perspective, while still making sure they were getting historically accurate information.
